Paws for Miles, based in the Cincinnati suburb of Loveland, recently rescued 70 dogs from what WKRC-TV described as “deplorable conditions” under an Amish dog breeder. The operator had called the nonprofit after he was warned of an upcoming state inspection. According to WKRC’s report, the operator wanted to remove as many animals as he could before the inspectors arrived.
But the rescuers described the conditions in their facility as “terrible”.
“They can move so much when there’s 20 of them in a 10-foot by 20-foot pen. When you have 20 of them in there, they’re all rubbing against each other, rubbing against the chain link.” said Aaron Jones of Paws for Miles.
But when a reporter from the station asked if the volunteers got the impression that the puppy worker was embarrassed by the situation, Lisa Hammond said: “Oh no. He was quite proud.”
“He was more concerned about not making money from them than he was about the dogs,” Hammond said.
Too often, this is the type of person that a buyer supports with the purchase of an animal billed as a purebred dog.
Do your homework. If it is important to you to bring into your family a purebred animal – perhaps with paper – research reputable, small breeders who work hard to avoid the types of conditions Paws for Miles found in Holmes County.
Better yet, consider visiting an animal shelter to adopt a dog (or cat) that may not have documents, but that will be grateful that you arrived and become part of your family. Whatever you do, don’t help operators like the one in Holmes County to continue to profit from animal abuse and neglect.
