Couple’s warning after spending $19k on Maldives getaway – it’s not always how it looks on Instagram

Couple warn tourists ‘not to take travel advice from social media’ after spending almost all of their $12,000 (NZ$19,000) Holidays in the Maldives in “thick clouds and rain.”

Oskar Kappland and Dan Goz, both 26, booked the nine-day, no-expenses-paid trip to celebrate their nine-year anniversary of being together.

They expected to experience picturesque sunsets and sparkling crystal seas at the two resorts where they stayed.

They had seen countless Instagram posts about the Maldives with perfect weather and never considered that it might not be like this all the time.

Instead, more than half of the expensive trip was spent under shelter because of the bad weather – despite the fact that they went in December, which is “high season” for the weather.

Expectation versus reality as bloggers suffer a dismal hiatus.

Expectation versus reality as bloggers suffer a dismal hiatus.

Goz, a travel critic, said it was “the opposite of travel inspo.”

He said: “We tried to look at the funny side because all you can do is laugh. We know it was normal for the afternoon keys, but we had four straight days of thick clouds and rain!

“Our overall message is don’t set your expectations based on travel advice from social media. Do your research, social media doesn’t represent reality.

“Make sure you know what to expect and prepare for the good and the bad.”

The couple, originally from Gothenburg, Sweden, who post their travels on social media @oskaranddan, had had been to Maldives before and loved it.

So they never considered that their return between December 6 and 14 would be different.

They had four days booked in a hotel in Dhigurah, Maldives, famous for whale shark sightings. But there were constant “thick clouds and drizzling rain” and they saw no one.

Kappland, a musician, said: “The whole place is dependent on the weather – we go for swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing.”

In the second part of the vacation, they stayed at a fancy resort that cost US$1,500 a night, where there were indoor activities on offer to compensate.

They saw gray skies and rain for seven of the nine days they were away.

They tried to enjoy the trip, but said the weather was just as bad as at home.

Kappland said: “We are originally from Sweden and the weather was like our winter here, outside of Sweden it is colder. That’s what we tried to escape in Northern Europe!”

They want to warn people to be careful about their expectations when traveling – even to a destination with an “Instagrammable” reputation.

Goz said: “We know a lot of people who want to go just for the pics – for those people, it’s not a game worth playing. We’ve been using social media for years, people always see the best version online and give a false.perspective of how the world is.

“People could be willing to spend thousands of dollars to go to the Maldives and not know that half or more of their stay could be bad weather.

“It’s paradise when it’s sunny – but when it’s not, you’re just stuck.”
